My faith

I realized that I promised a post about my faith, and now is the time!

I often call myself a christian even though I do not agree with so much in the Bible.
I have, as far back in my life I can remember, had a faith in God. My mother used to pray with us kids when I was a child, but she has never forced religion on me. My faith, I have found myself.
Because my family and relatives are baptists, I was neither confirmed or baptized as a child so I chose myself to do it when I was 15 years old. and I'm happy I got to choose that myself because it's one of my greatest memories.

Priest was my dreamjob for many many years. However, what made me almost lose faith completely was when I started studying religion courses. I thought that I should read a distancecourse in religion before I begun my priest-education, to see how it was. It was a really smart choice. All religions confused me and I couldn't understand why there are so many when they still are so similar! I finished the class with one faith left and that is that there is something. But I can't say which religion is the true one, so it felt wrong to stand and preach about something I'm not sure of. With a heavy heart, I put the priest idea on the shelf.

If it wasn't for God, and the wonderful people who worked in the church and all the churchactivities I was so happy with during my teenage years, I don't know what my life would have looked like today.
I was depressed, ostracized in my school and felt so lonely when I begun visiting the church. A belief can save lives and I am sure it has saved more than mine, and then it does not matter if it was Buddha or God who did it. My belief is that there is something/someone watching over me, helping me when I need support.
I am not bound to the Bible, I think I have actually created myself my own little religion just for me..
I have created an image of the God I would like to believe in.
To quote a Swedish author about his faith:
"My God, are the vulnerables God, womens God, the homosexuals God. My God is ostracizeds God, the sufferings God, the weaks God., I declare war against the other God."

According to the Bible the gay people were stoned, a woman can't be a priest and God never forgives anything. This is something I have never been able to understand. I have read both the Old and New Testaments, but the God I meet in the New Testament is not the same God as in the old.
Jesus was the good, the forgiving and God seemed to be the one who was punishing and resentful.
So to be honest, I have not been reading in the Bible since I was 18..
I think that people have adapted the bible according to how they thought people should be living at the time and wanted people to be scared of God. Maybe Jesus came and change all that, I don't know. :)
If there were to be a new bible written today for example it would not be like the old testament at all.

I know and feel in my heart that God exists, but sometimes I'm hesitant to call myself a Christian because I don't want to stand for everything the Bible says so I usually prefer to call myself follower of Jesus!

  1. Well well. This was quite a good thing to read. It seems that we have really similar beliefs -as, of course, should all human beings have: the thing that matters is faith in humanity and goodness. Without our humanity we are but creatures. Then again, my life's a lot easier when I don't only try to do the right thing but also believe in guidance through my own difficult times. But that's really so individual, what we want to believe in and what we want to call it. I would really love to write a post about these things but don't really know where to start. Any ideas darling?

    1. I agree with you, I can't imagine a life without that comforting feeling which to me is "God".
Maybe you can write about what made you belivie in something and take it from there? :D

  6. First I want to say how much I admire your courage for putting such a personal thing out there. I use to be in a very strict religion. I worked a full time job, my children were very young and my husband did not approve. One day I just said I am done. It was making me feel like I was not doing anything right. I felt like I was not a good mother, wife, employee or christian. Also my baby brother and my brother-in-law are gay. i have a hard time believing a god who made the universe cares who you love. I do not think that is what religion is all about. I am still a very spiritual person and I am adding you to my daily prayers. I really believe putting it out there in the universe a good thing.

    1. Thank you so much! <3
I understand, you shouldn't be forced to beliving and if the religion makes you feel bad instead of safe and happy, then it's not right for you.

I agree with you, I think that if God hated the gays so much he would have destroyed this planet long time ago.

  7. this was really interesting :-) and the idea of 'creating' your own religion or changing the things you did not like in a religion to something you like is great! having faith seems to be one of the biggest power-sources, too.
    thanks for sharing!

I absolutely feel that way, my faith makes more strong and powerful, and if even if I die and realize that there actually is no God, I would still feel my faith was worth it because it made my life easier and gave me strenght.

    2. Det är ju så det ska vara. Jag gillar ju tolkningen "WWJD". "What would Jesus do?"

  9. Nice post, Lesthi. Like you, I've modified things somewhat myself - there's probably a little bit of every religion in there! I think a follower of Jesus is a good way to put it. :o)

Yes same here, I take the good parts from everything, that's why I have been very interested in New age as well, it feels like they have a good thing going there.

  10. This is a very interesting post.
I believe in a God too, although I wouldn't say it's the christian God: too homophobic and sexist for my tastes (I started being skeptical about my religion the second I realized women couldn't be priests and men could). I've been baptized in a catholic church when I was two months old and I've decided that, if I'll ever have kids, I'll never, ever, ever force my beliefs on them. Religion should be the choice of an adult person who has been educated to it, not a "tradition" we impose on children. When I told my parents that I wasn't interested in my confirmation, they just told me that: "everyone does it, why should you be the only one who doesn't do it?" (conformists much...?), "your grandparents would be so disappointed" (so? It's not even remotely their fucking business, and I shouldn't be forced to do something I don't want to do just to not let them down: they should be the ones to understand my reasons, not the other way around) and that once I had done it, I could have chosen whether to be a christian or not. But I was choosing right the moment I told them I didn't want to do it, so they weren't making any sense.
I'm sure that religions are good, but it's bad to shove them down other people's throat, especially when they are too young to analyze them critically.

    1. You are so right and I'm glad that you made your own choice. I really can't see the point of forcing someone into religion, what's the point if the person don't even belivie anyway O.o I will as well let my children choose themself, people think I'm weird because I won't have them baptized as toddlers, but I truly belivie that it's better if people get to choose themself. :)

    2. Actually I had to give in to their will, eventually... the local priest had even started to tell other kids to avoid me and to stay away from me because I was "different" (as in, "I wasn't obeying the orders"). Way to go dude, that's EXACTLY how you're going to keep me faithful and religious <3
